Day 8:
|
Just as we were about to get on the helicopter, we were stopped because of bad weather. So we checked out the glacier on land. Wow. |
Then we started our drive down towards Queenstown, the touristy action town. However, to get there, we had to cross over the Haast mountain pass. There are only 2 roads linking one half of the country to the other. Well, they were widening the road... and accidentally used too much dynamite.
So, the only road for hundreds of miles was closed. "No worries, it MIGHT be open tomorrow." It was raining so hard we couldn't even see the wild penguins, which were the only attraction in Haast. We grabbed a motel room quickly, as the town was filling up fast. We stayed at a place that made the Bates Motel look appealing. We unrolled the sleeping bags on top of the bed & divided the one candy bar we had for dinner. We tried to wash it down with some water, but only rust came out of the pipes. But the TV worked, & we got a chance to catch up on our favorite New Zealand, Australian and British soap operas.
After reading the sign on this tree, we inquired about the motel
